New sorghum and millet cultivar introduction in Sub-Saharan Africa: impacts and research agenda

چکیده

In spite of substantial introduction of new sorghum and millet cultivars in semiarid SubSaharan Africa, there has been minimum aggregate impact on yields (FAO and ICRISAT, 1996: The World Sorghum Economies: Facts, Trends and Outlook. FAO, Rome, Italy and ICRISAT, Andhra Pradesh, India) in contrast with other crops, such as cotton and maize. Only where inorganic fertilizers and improved water retention or irrigation were combined with new cultivars were there large yield increases. Given the low soil fertility and irregular rainfall in semiarid regions, both increased water availability and higher levels of principal nutrients apparently will be necessary for substantial yield increase. The cultivar-alone strategy is unlikely to have a signi®cant sustainable yield e€ect and therefore reduce poverty in semiarid Sub-Saharan Africa. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Constraints to Increasing Agricultural Production and Productivity among Women Farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications for Agricultural Transformation Agenda

Agriculture is an important engine of growth and poverty reduction in much of Africa, Nigeria inclusive. But the sector is underperforming in part because women, who are often crucial resource in agriculture and rural economy, face constraints that reduce their productivity. An understanding of these constraints is a prerequisite to devising policies to improve agricultural production and produ...

Global Surgery – Redirecting Strategies for a Global Research Agenda; Comment on “Global Surgery – Informing National Strategies for Scaling Up Surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa”

More than three years have passed since the publication of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and its recommendations on scaling up surgery in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). An important gap, the voice of the districts as well as lack of contextualized research, has been noted in its support of national surgical plans that run the risk of being at best, aspirational. Moreover, a ‘one-size-fits-...

A New Generation of Physicians in Sub-Saharan Africa?; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

This commentary follows up on an editorial by Eyal and colleagues in which these authors discuss the implications of the emergence of non-physician clinicians (NPCs) on the health labour market for the education of medical doctors. We generally agree with those authors and we want to stress the importance of clarifying the terminology to describe these practitioners and of defining more formall...

Non-physician Clinicians – A Gain for Physicians’ Working in Sub-Saharan Africa; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

The changing demands on the health sectors in low- and middle-income countries especially sub-Saharan African countries continue to challenge efforts to address critical shortages of the health workforce. Addressing these challenges have led to the evolution of “non-physician clinicians” (NPCs), that assume some physician roles and thus mitigate the continuing shortage of doctors in these count...

The Impact of Climate Change on Crop Yields in Sub-Saharan Africa

This study estimates of the impact of climate change on yields for the four most commonly grown crops (millet, maize, sorghum and cassava) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A panel data approach is used to relate yields to standard weather variables, such as temperature and precipitation, and sophisticated weather measures, such as evapotranspiration and the standardized precipitation index (SPI). T...
